Tropical Storm Earl brushes past Virgin Islands; Hurricane Danielle to turn toward Europe
Tropical Storm Earl is bringing rain and gusty winds to parts of the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the northern Leeward Islands Sunday as the storm passes north of St. Thomas, the National Hurricane Center said.
Hurricane Danielle, the first hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season, is swirling over the mid-Atlantic and could take an eastward turn toward Europe in the coming days.
The NHC is also monitoring one more tropical wave that is emerging off the west coast of Africa.

Here's the latest update from the NHC as of 8 a.m. Sept. 4:

Location: 990 miles west of the Azores
Maximum wind speed: 75 mph
Direction: north at 1 mph
Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph with higher gusts. Some gradual strengthening is forecast through Monday.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles.

Maximum wind speed: 50 mph
Direction: west-northwest at 8 mph
Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph with higher gusts. Slow strengthening is expected during the next few days.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles from the center.

A tropical wave located just off the African coast is associated with some disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
An area of low pressure could form later this week and subsequent gradual development is possible as this system moves generally west-northwestward over the east-central tropical Atlantic.

Hurricane Danielle does not currently pose a threat to any coastal areas.

Colorado State University's two-week hurricane forecast for Sept. 1-14 calls for a 70% chance of near-normal activity, a 25% chance of above-normal activity and a 5% chance of below-normal activity.

When is the Atlantic hurricane season?
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.
When is the peak of hurricane season?
Although the season has gotten off to a quiet start, the peak of the season is Sept. 10, with the most activity happening between mid-August and mid-October, according to the Hurricane Center.
