Tropical Storm Humberto, MoviePass, 'Country Music' documentary: 5 things you need to know this weekend

Tropical storm eyes Florida, drenches Bahamas

Tropical storm watches have been hoisted along portions of the east coast of Florida due to a strengthening tropical system that's dumping heavy rain on the Dorian-soaked Bahamas. The system will almost certainly become Tropical Storm Humberto, the National Hurricane Center said. In Florida, a tropical storm watch has been posted for coastal areas from the Jupiter Inlet to the Flagler-Volusia county line. This means that tropical-storm-force winds of at least 39 mph are possible in the watch area by Saturday night, the Weather Channel said. In addition to the wind, "heavy rainfall and scattered flash flooding is possible this weekend in coastal sections of eastern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina," the hurricane center warned.

Ken Burns digs deep into 'Country Music' roots with documentary

Country music has told stories of everyday people for more than a century, but the genre exploded 30 years ago this year, with the emergence of superstars Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and others who created the seminal “Class of 1989” that would forever change American music. Beginning Sept. 15, PBS will debut “Country Music,” the latest series from filmmaker Ken Burns. It is an exhaustive panoramic chronicling the history of country music. Stretching over more than 16 hours, the series serves as an oral history of the genre. The documentary is already rekindling conversations about the state of country music, and the USA TODAY Network examines country music history, its current landscape and where it is going in our special project, Country Mile.

The show won't go on: It's likely curtains for MoviePass

MoviePass, the film ticket app that allowed movie lovers to visit theaters to catch flicks at a discount, will stop operating Saturday, according to Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc., the company that owns roughly 92% of its shares. "Its efforts to recapitalize MoviePass have not been successful to date," the firm said in a statement. A letter published on the company's website attributed to CEO Mitch Lowe uses similar language, but doesn't state MoviePass is closing permanently. It's an abrupt but not an unexpected likely end for the company as it started hot before getting more expensive, and, controversially, re-enrolling customers in new services without their permission.

Local UAWs prepare GM workers for possible strike

A contract deadline is set to expire Saturday night between General Motors and the United Auto Workers union. In November 2018, GM angered workers when it "unallocated" product to four U.S. plants, indefinitely idling them and affecting thousands of union jobs — though one of them, Detroit-Hamtramck, continues to operate. Most of the workers at the other factories have had to transfer to GM jobs, sometimes in other parts of the country, if they want to stay with the automaker. If the two sides are at a standoff and a tentative contract cannot be agreed to, then the UAW could call for all of GM's 46,000 UAW workers to strike or it could strike select plants that paralyze the company, said Harley Shaiken, professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in labor issues and has studied the various wage tiers, profit-sharing payouts and overtime hours of workers at Detroit's car companies..
