Tropical Storm Ian: Deadline extended to seek help, recovery center closes for holiday

People have more time to apply for federal help recovering from Tropical Storm Ian. Meanwhile, the disaster recovery center in Volusia County will temporarily close for the holiday.

The disaster recovery center at the Florida Department of Health-Volusia at 1845 Holsonback Drive in Daytona Beach will be closed Thanksgiving Day and will reopen at 9 a.m. Monday, according to a county news release.

Also, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for Volusia County residents to apply for federal disaster assistance for Tropical Storm Ian to Jan. 12.

"If you have insurance, you are encouraged to file a claim for damage to your home, personal property and vehicles before you apply for FEMA assistance," according to a FEMA news release. "FEMA cannot duplicate other sources of assistance you may have received."

The federal government hasn't declared Volusia County a federal disaster zone for Hurricane Nicole, so people who need help recovering from that storm should contact Volusia County Emergency Management at 386-254-1500 for information on what help is available.
