Tropical Storm Nicole: What we know about closings and cancellations in the Jacksonville area

Jacksonville-area governments, schools and businesses are monitoring Tropical Storm Nicole, which is expected to bring high winds and potential flooding to Northeast Florida this week.

Nicole is expected to come ashore well south of Jacksonville late Wednesday night and cross the peninsula before turning northeast without directly hitting the city, according to a National Weather Service forecast.

The storm is expected to remain in Florida most of Thursday, then move north across Georgia and the Carolinas and reach Connecticut by Saturday morning

Rainfall totaling three to four inches is expected this week in Duval, Nassau, Baker and most of Clay counties, with four to six inches forecast in most of St. Johns as well as parts of Clay and Putnam counties and all of Flagler.

Some cancellations and closures have already been announced:

Public K-12 schools

  • Duval County Public Schools will close Thursday. Athletics, extracurricular activities and afterschool activities are canceled for Thursday and will be rescheduled. The school district will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day, but athletic events and activities scheduled for Friday and Saturday are not affected.

  • Clay County schools will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • Putnam County schools will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day. All after-school activities and athletics are canceled at the end of the school day Wednesday.

  • St. Johns County schools will have early release Wednesday, close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day. There will be no after-school activities, events or athletics.

  • Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • Nassau County schools will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day. All afterschool activities will be canceled Wednesday and Thursday.

  • Bradford County schools will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • Camden County (Ga.) schools will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • Glynn County (Ga.) schools will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • IDEA Public Schools in Jacksonville will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Private K-12 schools

  • San Jose Charter School in Jacksonville will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day. After-school activities are canceled Wednesday through Sunday.

  • The Horizon Institute in Jacksonville will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • St. Johns Country Day School in Orange Park will close Thursday and reopen Monday.

  • Catholic schools in the Diocese of St. Augustine will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • The Bolles School and all its campuses will be closed Thursday and reopen Friday.

  • Christ’s Church Academy will close Thursday and will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day. All outdoor athletics, extracurricular, and afterschool activities are canceled for Wednesday and Thursday.

  • Jacksonville Country Day School will close Thursday. Extended Care and Enrichment activities, including basketball practices and games, will also be canceled Thursday.

  • Providence School and Preschool will close Thursday and all athletic and extracurricular activities canceled. They will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • Trinity Christian Academy will close Thursday and all extra-curricular activities canceled. The school will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • The Episcopal School of Jacksonville will close Thursday.

Courts/government

  • All Jacksonville city offices, including public libraries, will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day. Huguenot Park and Hanna Park will be closed Thursday.

  • The Jacksonville Beach Pier closed at noon Wednesday.

  • Court operations have been suspended in Putnam and St. Johns counties Thursday and Friday. Weather permitting, regular court operations will resume on Monday.

  • The Duval County Courthouse, its Beaches branch and Clerk of Court offices will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • The Clay County Health Department's offices will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • All St. Johns County government offices and departments, including parks, piers, boat ramps, playing fields, libraries, bookmobiles and book drops, will close at noon Wednesday and remain closed Thursday and the Veterans Day holiday Friday.

  • St. Augustine government offices are closed, as is the city marina.

  • St. Augustine Beach government offices will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Maritime

  • Jacksonville port operations will be largely closed beginning 8 a.m. Wednesday.

  • St. Johns River Ferry service will be suspended through Thursday and is expected to resume Friday.

Higher education

  • Flagler College will hold classes remotely Wednesday through Friday.

  • St. Johns River State College in Palatka will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • Nova Southeastern University’s Jacksonville campus will close Wednesday and Thursday.

  • Florida State College at Jacksonville has canceled all classes and activities Thursday, including online classes. The college will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day, but classes will resume and all locations will reopen Saturday.

  • The University of North Florida will close its offices and cancel all classes and events, including online classes, for Thursday. The college will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day, but the campus will be open for campus activities and events. Thursday's UNF women's basketball game against College of Charleston is also postponed.

  • Jacksonville University will hold Thursday classes online only and the campus will be closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • Saint Leo University will close most of its Florida locations Thursday, including Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport. Night classes will move online for those locations Wednesday.

  • Edward Waters University will operate remotely Thursday for all scheduled classes and meetings for faculty and staff. All other in-person activities Thursday have been canceled. The campus will be closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • Events and entertainment

  • The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens will close Thursday.

  • Jacksonville's Veterans Day parade Friday has been canceled.

  • The Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair will close Thursday and reopen at 3 p.m. Friday.

  • The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens will close Wednesday and is expected to reopen Saturday.

  • Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments in St. Augustine will close Wednesday.Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, including Fort Caroline National Memorial, will close 5 p.m., Wednesday. Kingsley Plantation closed at 5 p.m. Tuesday. All sites will be closed through Friday and will not reopen Saturday until a complete safety assessment has taken place.

  • The Joe Satriani concert at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall on Wednesday has been postponed. Tickets will be honored on the yet-to-be determined new date; refunds will be available for ticketholders unable to attend the new date.

  • The Fortunate Youth concert at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall Thursday has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 15. Tickets will be honored for the new date; refunds will be available for ticketholders unable to attend.

  • The Adam Sandler show at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Thursday has been rescheduled Friday. Tickets will be honored for the new date; refunds will be available for ticketholders unable to attend.

  • St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Ponte Vedra Concert Hall box offices will be closed Thursday, November 10. The amphitheatre box office will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and can process refunds for tickets purchased at both venues.

  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's 2022 Light The Night fundraiser in Jacksonville Thursday has been rescheduled to Nov. 19.

  • MOCA Jacksonville will close Thursday and remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Other closures, cancellations

  • The St. Johns County Council on Aging will close all of its senior centers and facilities House Wednesday and  Thursday. They will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

  • The St. Johns County Sunshine Bus and Paratransit Transportation Service will be suspended Thursday.

  • First Coast YMCA has canceled all youth sports and outdoor activities through Thursday.

  • JTA Bus Routes will run on a Saturday schedule on Thursday and resume regular scheduled Friday. Bus service will be suspended in case of sustained winds reaching 35 miles. The Skyway will close Thursday and reopen Friday.

  • IKEA Jacksonville will close all store operations, including customer home delivery and online purchase pickup, on Thursday, but is expected to reopen at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

  • A food giveaway Saturday at Edward Waters University's Schell-Sweet Community Resource Center has been canceled.

  • Waste Management will suspend waste collection service in Nassau, Camden, Baker, Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties Thursday. Here is the new schedule:

Nassau County: Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

City of Jacksonville: Thursday customers will be serviced on Saturday, and Friday customers will be serviced as normal.

City of Jacksonville Beach: Thursday garbage and yard waste customers will receive service on their next regularly scheduled collection day. Thursday recycling customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

Clay County: Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

St. Johns County: Thursday customers will be serviced on Saturday, and Friday customers will be serviced as normal.
