Tropical Storm Nigel to develop to hurricane Sunday or Monday, NHC says

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring Tropical Storm Nigel, which is likely to become a hurricane Sunday night or on Monday.

Nigel formed Saturday and continues to strengthen over the central Atlantic Sunday.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect from Nigel.

Here's the latest update from the NHC as of 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023:

Tropical Storm Nigel:

  • Location: 990 miles NE of the Lesser Antilles, or 1,115 miles ESE of Bermuda

  • Maximum wind speed: 60 mph

  • Direction: NNW at 13 mph
