Tropical Storm Nigel expected to strengthen into a hurricane

Channel 9 meteorologists continue to monitor the tropics.

Tropical Storm Nigel will strengthen on Sunday.

Meteorologist Kassandra Crimi said it is expected to become a hurricane by early Monday.

Nigel is not expected to impact land as it will stay in the Central Atlantic.

The area near Belize and the Yucatan of Mexico (Western Caribbean) is the spot we are watching. By Sunday and Monday it should start to develop (when it is near Western Cuba).

The main disturbance we are watching is located near the Yucatan Channel, between Cancun and western Cuba, and is showing better signs of organization as of Saturday afternoon.

As of 5am, TD # 10 continues to wobble near the Yucatan.  It is drifting south this morning and will stay near Mexico and Cuba for the next 24-36 hours, where it will continue to strengthen. We expect this storm to be a Tropical Storm (Idalia) later today.
