The latest storm of the Atlantic hurricane season has officially formed into Tropical Storm Tammy, bringing weather watches to several islands in the Caribbean Sea.

Tammy formed late Wednesday afternoon and is expected to gradually strengthen over the next few days as it approaches the Leeward Islands. The National Hurricane Center predicts that Tammy could possibly bring tropical storm conditions starting Friday and reach near hurricane intensity early Saturday.

The NHC says Tammy is expected to turn west-northwest Thursday and northwest Friday, sucking up the warm waters to grow to near-hurricane strength by the time it reaches the islands. The NHC predicts more watches and warnings will be necessary Thursday evening, as heavy rainfall could produce flash floods or mudslides.

  • Location: 465 miles east-southeast of Guadeloupe

  • Maximum sustained wind speed: 60 mph

  • Direction: west at 16 mph

Storm warnings and watches in effect for Tammy

A Tropical Storm Watch, meaning tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours, are in effect for the following places:

  • Barbados

  • Dominica

  • Martinique and Guadeloupe

  • Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis

  • Saba and St. Eustatius

When does hurricane season end?

With Tropical Storm Tammy named, that leaves two names remaining on the 2023 list of storms: Vince and Whitney. Hurricane season doesn't end until Nov. 30, although storms can and do form any time.

This season has been above the historical average when it comes to named storms. During an average hurricane season, 14 named storms form in the Atlantic basin, which covers the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

The peak of the season is Sept. 10, with the most activity happening between mid-August and mid-October, according to the hurricane center.
