Troy Football selected to Cure Bowl bowl in Trojans' first bowl game since 2018

Troy football has been selected to play in the Cure Bowl, marking its first appearance in a bowl game since 2018.

The Trojans will face C-USA Champion UT-San Antonio on Friday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN in Orlando. The matchup features two ranked conference champions. The Trojans are ranked No. 24 and the Roadrunners are ranked No. 22 in the USA Today Sports AFCA football coaches poll.

The Trojans (11-2) are coming off a 45-26 win in the Sun Belt Conference championship game over Coastal Carolina. The Trojans ended the regular season on a nine-game winning streak after starting 1-2 with losses to Ole Miss and Appalachian State. The Trojans underwent three five-wins seasons since their last bowl appearance in the 2018 Dollar General Bowl.

“I’m excited for our players, our staff and our university,” Sun Belt Coach of the Year Jon Sumrall said. “We’ve heard amazing things about the Cure Bowl and the bowl experience they provide for our student-athletes. We’re going to Orlando with the intention of winning a football game, but we’re also going to make sure that our players have a great time and are rewarded for a championship season.”

The Roadrunners (11-2) won the C-USA Championship with a win over North Texas. Like the Trojans, the RoadRunners are on a 10-game win streak after starting the season 1-2 with losses to Houston and Texas. They are led by quarterback Frank Harris, who has thrown for 3,865 yards and 31 touchdowns.

It is the first season for Trojans coach Sumrall after he was hired a year ago. He was formerly the co-defensive coordinator at Kentucky and was previously at Troy from 2015-17. The Trojans are led by Carlton Martial, the FBS career leader in tackles.
