Troy man dies in fall off Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina

Oct. 25—A Troy man has died after falling from an overlook on Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, officials said.

Todd A. Buckman, 53, was at one of the nature park's overlooks when he accidentally fell around 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, Sheriff Mike Henley said in a phone interview Tuesday.

Search crews and first responders located Buckman's body at the base of a cliff, Henley said.

Rescue crews responded to Grandfather Mountain State Park — located about 110 miles northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina — around 10 a.m. Sunday on a report of a missing person last seen at an overlook, according to a news release from the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, which oversees the park.

"The Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation is deeply saddened by today's incident and extends thoughts and prayers to all those affected," the foundation said in a statement.
