Troye Sivan Says He Was “Catfished By a Fake Greta Thunberg”

Gather round friends, it’s story time!

Troye Sivan must know how much everyone needs a distraction right now, because the singer-songwriter posted a five-minute video on Instagram detailing the time he was catfished by someone pretending to be Greta Thunberg and her family.

The anecdote goes like this: Troye says he got a call from his manager, who explained that she had been speaking with Greta’s father — or so she thought. He was told that the young climate activist wanted to partner with him on a project called “Stars Save the Earth,” and needless to say, he was extremely psyched about the prospect. “I was like, ‘Oh my god, this girl is so inspiring,’” he recounted on IG. “And now she wants to work with me!” Troye’s manager then gave him “Greta’s” phone number, and he shot her a quick text to continue the conversation.

Fortunately, it didn’t take either Troye or his manager long to realize they had been duped. In the clip, Troye went on to explain that his manager ultimately watched a YouTube video of Greta’s actual father, which led her to realize that the man she had spoken to on the phone sounded completely different. Oops?

“She was like, 'T, I don’t know how to tell you this, but I think we got catfished by a fake Greta Thunberg,'” Troye recalled.

It seems as though Troye is taking the whole thing in stride, or at least using it as a learning tool for going forward. “The fact that my ego was big enough to be like ‘Yeah, Greta Thunberg just wants to chill, she’s a big fan, we’re gonna save the planet together, this is gonna be f*ckin sick’ just completely mortified me,” he said. “And it also made me cry laughing.”

If this whole thing sounds a bit familiar, it’s because something eerily similar reportedly happened to Prince Harry earlier this year. In early March, it was reported that Harry had two phone calls where he believed he was speaking with Greta and her father, but was allegedly talking with two Russian hoaxers instead. It's unclear if the same people were behind Troye's experience.

Greta herself hasn’t yet commented on Troye’s video, but we definitely wouldn’t mind seeing a real collaboration between these two in the future. Right now, Greta is practicing social distancing after telling her fans that she experienced symptoms associated with COVID-19. “Now I’ve basically recovered, but — AND THIS IS THE BOTTOM LINE: I almost didn’t feel ill,” she wrote in an IG post earlier this week. “And this it what makes it so much more dangerous. Many (especially young people) might not notice any symptoms at all, or very mild symptoms. Then they don’t know they have the virus and can pass it on to people in risk groups. We who don’t belong to a risk group have an enormous responsibility, our actions can be the difference between life and death for many others.”
