Truck driver who was shot on Interstate 5 in San Joaquin County dies from injuries

A truck driver who was shot Thursday in a major incident on Interstate 5 in Lathrop has died, according to authorities.

The San Joaquin Medical Examiner’s office identified the deceased driver as Ilkhom Shodiev, 37, of Charlotte, N.C.

Around 12:50 p.m., Shodiev was driving an Amazon truck northbound on I-5, north of the Highway 120 junction, when he was shot. The large truck veered off the freeway near the Louise Avenue offramp and crashed into two parked vehicles next to a commercial building.

The incident closed the northbound freeway for a time Thursday afternoon and caused traffic backups.

No one else was injured in the crash.

According to a Gofundme account, Shodiev was the father of two young children.

California Highway Patrol investigators are trying to find any video footage of the area that might have captured the shooting. Police radio traffic suggested the shots might have been fired from a vehicle passing alongside the truck, but the CHP has not released any details of the shooting.

Emergency units responding to the scene confirmed the driver suffered gunshot wounds. CHP said the man was taken to a local hospital.

A CHP spokesman did not confirm the driver’s identity or release information on the investigation Friday.

“If you were driving on (northbound) I-5 between Highway 120 and Louise Ave, between 12:30 and 1 pm on June 15, and have a dash cam, we need your help,” said a Stockton CHP tweet on Friday.
