Truck fire on George Washington Bridge causes major delays for hours

Breaking news graphic

A truck fire led to major delays of multiple hours at the George Washington Bridge on Friday morning heading into New York.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey warned of "major delays" on both the upper and lower levels heading to New York. Earlier in the morning the upper level had a two-hour delay and the lower level an hour delay, per Port Authority.

By 8:45 a.m. the delays were 45 minutes for the upper level and 30 minutes for the lower level.

The fire was first reported at about 11 p.m. Thursday and video posted to social media showed the truck fully engulfed in flames.

The Friday morning commute also got a steady dose of rain to add further frustration to the drive.

Port Authority will post updates to its George Washington Bridge account on X, formerly known as Twitter, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation will share live updates on its website 511nj.org.
