The ‘True Detective: Night Country’ Teaser Is Here & We’re Hooked

The first season of True Detective felt like lighting in a bottle, anchored by two stellar performances and focused around a twisting mystery that didn’t let go until the final frame. While the subsequent seasons have had their moments, none quite recaptured that magic — however, the newest season looks poised to break that trend.
HBO released its first look at True Detective: Night Country, the series’ fourth season, featuring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as the new mystery-solving duo, who though at odds, have to come together to solve a crime just as night descends on their small Alaskan town.

The series takes place in Ennis, Alaska as the long winter night takes hold. Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) begin investigating why the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanished without a trace — leaving behind only their shoes. As they begin digging into what led to this disappearance they begin unearthing more of the terrifying truths buried under the ice.
The series stars Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star Lablanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe, and Joel D. Montgrand, along with Christopher Eccleston, and John Hawkes.

The first season of True Detective was directed entirely by Cary Joji Fukunaga. However, the following seasons all featured multiple directors. This season once again returns to having one director taking the helm for every episode. Issa Lopez, best known for directing the achingly brilliant magical realism horror film Tigers Are Not Afraid, will direct the entirety of the series.
While every season of True Detective has been intriguing, this one in particular has our queer radars up, thanks to being led by two talented LGBTQ+ actors. We can’t wait to see what the darkness holds this season — and, of course, all those plot twists.
