True Detective season 4, subtitled Night Country, has debuted with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The long-awaited latest instalment of the HBO anthology crime drama has avoided what could have been an unfortunate pattern of the odd-numbered seasons being critically acclaimed and the even-numbered seasons receiving a more mixed response (poor season 2).

Of the 28 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, all of them are positive. It should be noted that the 100% doesn't mean that all of the reviews gave perfect scores, as Rotten Tomatoes doesn't average out the scores. In fact, plenty of reviews have given the season something along the lines of a B grade or around a 7.5/10.

On the whole, the consensus seems to be that the new season is filled with a chilling atmosphere and intoxicating darkness, while also being leaner in its storytelling than previous runs (there are six episodes rather than eight this time around).

Jodie Foster, who leads the season as Detective Liz Danvers, is singled out amongst multiple reviews as giving a standout performance. Considering it's her first leading TV role since 1975 (!!), that's pretty good going.

"The season is creepy, moody, and effective. But it's never dour, nor hopeless," SlashFilm's Chris Evangelista said.

"Jodie Foster, Kali Reis and writer/director Issa Lopez are a formidable team. This is the best Foster has ever been, which is saying something, while newcomer Reis explodes on the screen. While not perfect, this is worthy of the True Detective brand," added Beyond the Trailer's Grace Randolph.

MovieWeb's Julian Roman agreed, stating: "True Detective: Night Country returns to the quality of its superb first season, delivering a sinister odyssey of brutal murders in a frozen, unforgiving setting. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis are riveting protagonists."

Meanwhile, Decider's Meghan O'Keefe shared: "True Detective: Night Country doesn't ever quite hit the smarmy noir notes [Nic] Pizzolatto's seasons were known for, but it's crisp, chilling fun. Foster is fantastic, Reis a revelation, and López an auteur on the rise."

As well as Foster, season 4 stars boxer turned actress Kali Reis, Doctor Who's Christopher Eccleston, Killing Eve's Fiona Shaw, Deadwood's John Hawkes, The Nevers' Finn Bennett and The Grizzlies' Anna Lambe.

Issa López took over from Nic Pizzolatto as head writer after he helmed the first three seasons, although he remains on board as an executive producer.

True Detective: Night Country streams on Max on January 14 in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW on January 15 in the UK.
