ROBSTOWN, Texas — Former President Donald Trump hinted he would “probably” run for president again in 2024 during a rally in South Texas, but indicated he wouldn’t make a formal announcement until after the midterms.

“In order to make our country successful, safe and glorious again, I will probably have to do it again,” the former Republican president said during a rally in Robstown, about 15 miles from Corpus Christi.

“But first," he continued, "we have to win a historic victory for the Republican Party this November."

Trump, 76, has broadly hinted he would run again, but his comments in Texas on Saturday — which came more than an hour into his remarks at the day-long event — are likely one of the strongest indications will run for the White House again.

Robstown was likely chosen as a destination because at least two South Texas congressional districts that have been Democratic strongholds for generations are considered to be in play.

Preceding Trump, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton addressed thousands of attendees at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds. Event organizers declined to disclose both how many people were expected to attend or final attendance figures. The fairgrounds' 35,000-square-foot central pavilion arena can seat up to 1,900 in the bleachers and up to 1,000 floor seats.

Other speakers included U.S. Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Victoria; Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Trump; and Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council. Abbott said he would not be able to attend due to an out-of-state fundraising trip.

Whether President Joe Biden, 79, will run for reelection remains to be seen.
