Trump-Biden debate debacle leaves viewers wanting less

Debate moderator Chris Wallace wasn’t the only one who could have used a time-out during Tuesday’s debate between President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden.

“For the first time ever, America begs for a commercial break,” Princeton University historian and NPR contributor Julian Zelizer tweeted half an hour into the frantic war of words between the 2020 presidential candidates.

Tuesday’s 90-minute debate frequently spun out of control, with Fox News' host Wallace playing ringleader.

Wallace criticized both candidates for speaking over one another, but made clear it was the president who was struggling most to abide by the ground rules agreed to by both campaigns.

“He never keeps his word,” Biden said.

Wallace suggested to Trump that if he wants to take over the program, he should become a TV host.

“Sir, if you want to switch seats we can do that,” Wallace joked.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer said at the end of Tuesday’s debate that he wouldn’t be surprised if Biden and Trump didn’t go through with their next two debates considering the lack of civility seen in the first one.
