Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is trading barbs with former President Trump over the centerpiece of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign — his vow to build a wall on the southern border and have Mexico pay for it.

Christie, who is challenging Trump for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, is accusing Trump of failing to follow through on his promise.

Trump punched back on Thursday with a post on Truth Social criticizing “sloppy” Chris Christie.

“Reported that Sloppy Chris Christie said I only built 50 Miles of Wall on the Southern Border,” Trump wrote in his post.

“Wrong! I built almost 500 Miles of Wall, including the fact that some very dilapidated areas had to be completely demolished with new Wall then built,” Trump added. “He knows this but keeps repeating the lies. That is why he left New Jersey with a 9% Approval Rating, the lowest on record, and is currently polling at around 2% in the Republican Primary — with nobody showing up at his ‘events.’ Loser!”

Christie appeared to respond Friday morning with a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

In the post, Christie said Trump only built “52 miles” of the wall. The post also featured a clip of an interview he did Thursday on Newsmax in response to Trump’s interview on the network Wednesday.

“Trump’s a big boy,” Christie said in his post. “Stop making excuses for him. He said he was going to build us a big beautiful wall. In four years he got us 52 miles and not a single peso from Mexico. Congratulations…”

Christie has made attacks on Trump, a one-time ally, the main focus of his new presidential campaign. He’s also criticized some other GOP rivals for the nomination for not making sharper attacks on Trump, the front-runner in the race.

The two have been battling for weeks over the construction of the wall and how much was built, using different numbers to make their points.

Christie so far is not making much of a dent in Trump’s national polling lead. He is trying to make a run in New Hampshire and has seen his numbers rise in the Granite State, though he is far behind Trump.
