Testifying before the House January 6 Committee, former U.S. attorney general William Barr said that President Trump seemed to be “detached from reality” after the 2020 election, refusing to accept that his claims of election fraud were baseless.

In pre-recorded testimony played during Monday’s hearing, Barr discussed a report touted by Trump in the wake of the election purporting to show problems with voting machines made by Dominion.

“I was somewhat demoralized because I thought, boy, if he really believes this stuff he has, you know, lost contact with—become detached from reality,” Barr told the committee.

Barr said later in his testimony that he told Trump of “how crazy some of these allegations were,” but that Trump did not appear interested in the facts of the matter.

“There was never an indication of interest in what the actual facts were,” Barr said.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that Democrats stole the 2020 presidential election via widespread voter fraud. Barr said in his testimony that he did not think the election was stolen.

The January 6 committee is currently hearing testimony on Trump’s efforts to prove the election was fraudulent. Earlier on Monday, former Trump-campaign manager Bill Stepien announced that he would not appear at the hearing because of a family emergency. The committee was told that Steipen’s wife had gone into labor, the Associated Press reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.
