Sean Parnell, the leading Republican candidate for Senate in Pennsylvania, raised $1.1 million in the third quarter as he moves to hold off opponents gunning for him in the primary.

Parnell announced his bid for an open Pennsylvania Senate seat in May but vaulted to the top of the GOP field early last month after being endorsed by former President Donald Trump. That boost helped Parnell top more than $1 million raised from July 1 to Sept. 30. He received more than 16,000 contributions from 10,000-plus donors who gave an average of $60 each.

Parnell collected campaign cash from all 50 states and all 67 Pennsylvania counties.

The Parnell campaign estimates it entered October with a war chest of approximately $1 million, with officials continuing to tally third-quarter donations late Thursday when initial figures were shared with the Washington Examiner. Third-quarter campaign fundraising filings are due to the Federal Election Commission no later than Oct. 15.

Parnell, 40, who lost a close race for Congress in 2020 to Democratic Rep. Conor Lamb, is a combat veteran and bestselling novelist. His competition in the Republican primary includes Army veteran and Trump campaign activist Kathy Barnette, real estate developer and 2018 GOP nominee for lieutenant governor Jeff Bartos, and former ambassador Carla Sands.

Sen. Pat Toomey, the Republican incumbent, is retiring in 2022.

Parnell raised $562,000 in the month and a half after launching his campaign in the spring and closing the second quarter with just under $600,000 in cash on hand. Republicans need to win one seat to win control of the Senate.
