President Donald Trump welcomed some last minute tag-alongs aboard his Air Force One trip to Louisiana on Friday evening, extending a surprise invitation to the Little League world champion Eastbank All Stars baseball team to catch a ride home in style.
The Jefferson Parish-based team was feted by Trump at the White House earlier Friday, and pictures from the team’s Facebook page show the middle-schoolers getting a tour of the Capitol and being hosted by Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the House minority whip.
The Eastbank All-Stars defeated Curaçao 8-0 in August to clinch the state’s first Little League World Series title. Trump congratulated the team shortly after its win, and invited the players to the White House via Twitter. He also celebrated the Little League softball world champions, the Rowan County All-Stars from North Carolina, at the White House on Friday.
Scalise tweeted out a photo of himself and the Eastbank team on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, writing: “The champs are flying back to Louisiana on Air Force One with @realDonaldTrump after celebrating their Little League World Series Championship victory at The @WhiteHouse!”
“What an amazing day! I’m so proud of this team!” he added.
According to a media pool report, after arriving at the airbase close to an hour after his scheduled departure time, Trump shook hands with the players on the tarmac before inviting them to board the plane with him.
Trump was heading to Lake Charles, La., to rally Republicans ahead of Saturday’s so-called jungle gubernatorial primary. The president is looking to force a runoff between Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, and one of two Republican challengers, Rep. Ralph Abraham and Eddie Rispone, a self-funding businessman.
