A selection of US late night TV hosts have mocked Donald Trump’s retweets of former National Lampoon star Randy Quaid on Twitter.

Quaid is known for posting conspiracy theories, as well as bizarre messages and videos in support of the president, some of which were recently shared by Trump himself.

In one of the retweeted videos, Quaid can be seen reading one of Trump’s tweets aloud in a sinister voice, claiming “Fox News daytime ratings have completely collapsed”, while his face is covered in strobe lighting.

Another sees Quaid sitting in a wooden chair, asking Americans to “wake up”.

“Is this the way America goes?” asks the actor, who was once nominated for an Oscar for his appearance in The Last Detail. “From George Washington to George Soros? From oceans white with foam to a socialist swamp.”

"Trump trumpets reveille and it's time to heed the call. A day of reckoning is nigh! Wake up!” he shouts.

Also among the tweets shared by Trump is one in which Quaid makes reference to “election fraud”.

“Thank you Randy, working hard to clean up the stench of the 2020 Election Hoax!” wrote the US president, who failed to win re-election earlier this month, losing to Democratic contender Joe Biden.

Speaking on his late night series, Jimmy Kimmel addressed the president’s social media activity.

“For those who remember Randy Quaid as Cousin Eddie from the Vacation movies, he has a long list of accomplishments outside acting: He’s been arrested a few times, he tried to get asylum in Canada, he believes there’s a group called the Hollywood Star Whackers that is plotting to kill him – and our president retweeted that person five times today,” he said.

“Look out, kids – Santa’s been eating bath salts this year,” he joked, referring to Quaid’s beard.

James Corden also referenced the behaviour on his series, saying: “Five Randy Quaid retweets. Two, sure. Three, that’s pushing it. Five? I think that makes him secretary of agriculture.”

Speaking on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert said: “So, a crazy guy retweeted another crazy guy performing the first crazy guy’s crazy tweet. It’s a Möbius mess. It’s like watching two toddlers try to change each other’s diapers, but somehow, it’s even more full of crap.”
