Donald Trump has attacked US transport secretary Pete Buttigieg in his latest Truth Social diatribe, calling him “weak and totally ineffective”, deriding the pronunciation of his surname and accusing him and his party of “disinformation” and “gross incompetence” over the Ohio train derailment.

Mr Buttigieg arrived in East Palestine, Ohio, a day after Mr Trump last week to inspect the costly chemical cleanup after the freight train crash of 3 February and has been outspoken about harmful industrial deregulation under the Trump administration and its possible role in the disaster.

Meanwhile, veteran media tycoon Rupert Murdoch has admitted during a sworn deposition that top personalities at Fox News promoted a baseless narrative that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen from Mr Trump, according to a recent filing in a voting machine company’s billion-dollar lawsuit against the network.

The chair of the right-wing media empire said that hosts including Maria Bartiromo, Lou Dobbs, Sean Hannity and Jeanine Pirro “endorsed at times this false notion of a stolen election,” claims that former president and his allies continue to amplify as he seeks re-election in 2024.

“I would have liked us to be stronger in denouncing it in hindsight,” Mr Murdoch said, according to the court documents.

Latino Republicans push back on party’s immigration agenda

More than half of the residents in the slice of Miami that includes Little Havana were born abroad. And when Republican congresswoman  Maria Elvira Salazar ran for re-election last year, she won by 15 percentage points.

The GOP’s dominance of Florida’s 27th congressional district is emblematic of the party’s inroads with Latino voters in recent years in much of the US and especially in Florida. Those gains helped governor Ron DeSantis decisively win re-election last year and contributed to the GOP taking back control of the House of Representatives.

That strong showing, however, is leading to some tension as the newly emboldened Republicans in Washington aim to launch an aggressive agenda, particularly around immigration policy. Ms Salazar is among a handful of Republicans pushing back against a sweeping proposal being considered in the House that would restrict asylum at the US-Mexico border.

Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade asked Mr Bush, himself a former Florida governor, whether 2024 offered his successor an opportunity to seek the White House.

“I think it is,” Mr Bush said. “He’s been a really effective governor. He’s young. I think we’re on the verge of a generational change in our politics. Kind of hope so.”

A man who allegedly took part in the insurrection on January 6 2021 wearing the head of a panda costume has been arrested by the FBI.

Jesse James Rumson was arrested in Florida on Monday. He is accused of storming the US Capitol among hundreds of other Trump supporters in an attempt to block Congress from certifying the 2020 election victory of President Joe Biden.

Court records state that Mr Rumson faces several charges including assaulting, resisting, or impeding an officer and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds.

The governor married his wife Casey DeSantis at the Walt Disney World Resort in 2009, according to Insider.

“In looking forward to what we ended up doing as governor and some of the face-offs that we had with some major institutions in Florida, it’s kind of ironic,” Mr DeSantis told SiriusXM Patriot radio in an interview set to be broadcast on Monday, a transcript obtained by Insider revealed.

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is returning to the DC area as the 2024 primary contest begins to heat up with the announcements of Donald Trump and Nikki Haley, the first official contenders.

From Wednesday through Saturday, some of the nation’s most prominent Republicans will address audiences of young activists, party officials and veteran operatives as they make their respective cases for their own personal brands of conservatism.

Just as notable as those attending the event, however, is the list of those who declined invitations: Florida governor Ron DeSantis, thought to be one of the strongest potential 2024 GOP primary candidates, will not be attending while former US vice president Mike Pence, also thought to be readying a 2024 bid, has spurned the gathering.

Ron DeSantis has taken over the governing structure for Disney World following a political battle between the corporate giant and Florida’s Republican governor and conservative state lawmakers over a controversial measure that opponents have derided as the state’s “Don’t Say Gay” law.

At an event on 27 February, the governor signed a bill that amounts to a state takeover of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the governing body around Disney World properties in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista spanning 39 square miles and land across Orange and Osceola counties.

The district, implemented in 1967, allows Disney to effectively control its own land use and zoning rules and operate its own public services, including water, sanitation, emergency services and infrastructure maintenance.

Most recently picking up the endorsement of former Gov Jeb Bush, Florida Gov Ron DeSantis is showing day by day that he will likely be the most credible alternative to Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican primary.

But as conservative writer Jonathan Last opines in The Bulwark, that position comes with its own set of burdens that Mr Trump can weaponise against a challenger.

“DeSantis has made his bones by being an enemy of the establishment. That’s easy when the establishment is the mainstream media,” writes Last.

He continues: “But we’re about to enter and environment when the establishment will be conservative media. And DeSantis is going to be championed by Fox and National Review and all the same people who were into George W. Bush once upon a time.”

“He cheated on the Election(s),” the former president raged: “The whole system is RIGGED. Why isn’t he being prosecuted? The Democrats only know how to cheat. America isn’t going to take it much longer!”

Clearly having a very normal Sunday evening at home in his rotting mansion, Mr Trump also tweeted, sorry “truthed”: “Crooked Democrat Prosecutors, many of them Racists in Reverse, are trying to steal a second Presidential Election. They did it in 2020, and we’re not going to let them do it again in 2024. MAGA!!!”

Ex-president accused of ‘shell game with classified documents’

Department of Justice (DoJ) investigators are examining whether the actions by Mr Trump and at least one of his long-time aides may have kept a box containing documents with classified markings from being discovered during the search of his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, property by FBI agents on 8 August last year.

According to CNN, the box at issue contained “a handful” of documents bearing classification markings as well as copies of presidential schedules dating back to Mr Trump’s time in the White House.

Citing a person familiar with both the box’s laborious journey between locations connected to the ex-president and the inquiry being overseen by special counsel Jack Smith, CNN said federal investigators suspect Mr Trump played a “shell game with classified documents” by directing staff to move the box between Mar-a-Lago and a nearby office block rented by Mr Trump’s team with federal funds available to him under the Former Presidents Act.

Mr Trump is currently being mocked for his ludicrous remarks on the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, made in a radio interview with former Fox anchor Glenn Beck.

“The saddest part about the war is that this is a war that should’ve never happened, right, okay?” the 45th president said.

“So now it happened. Now you have to get people in a room. You have to knock heads and you have to get it done.

“That would mean saying things to [Vladimir] Putin and saying things to [Volodymyr] Zelensky that they’re not gonna want to hear and getting them into a room and getting it done.”

Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has told CNN that a “loyalty pledge” might become a requirement for candidates taking part in the party’s presidential debates, which would compel the likes of Mr Trump to support the eventual winner if he himself is not nominated, a bid to avoid the damaging name-calling, animosity and ill-feeling that has toxified previous head-to-heads.

“We haven’t put the criteria out, but I expect a pledge will be part of it,” Ms McDaniel told Dana Bash on Sunday’s State of the Union, adding: “I think they’re all going to sign it.”

Donald Trump attempted to have popular late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel silenced during his presidency by having his White House staff call ABC owner Disney to demand an end to his jokes at the Trump’s administration’s expense, according to Rolling Stone.

A former Trump official told the magazine that that “severity of Mr Trump’s fury” was conveyed in at least two separate phone calls to executives because the commander-in-chief felt the comedian had been “very dishonest and doing things that he would have once sued over”.

“I do not know to who, but it happened,” the unnamed ex-aide said. “Nobody thought it was going to change anything but DJT was focused on it so we had to do something… It was doing something, mostly, to say to [Trump], ‘Hey, we did this.’”
