Trump, as promised, returns to 'Fox & Friends' Monday
A week after informing the hosts of “Fox & Friends” he’d be performing on the show every Monday until Election Day, President Donald Trump did just that Monday morning.
Trump used the virtual appearance to announce by phone that he’d narrowed his list of replacements for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg — who died Friday — to five candidates. The former “Apprentice” host plans to announce his pick at the end of the week.
The president seemed to catch his apparent “Fox & Friends” co-hosts off-guard last week when he informed them that an arrangement had been made behind the scenes as he and the right-wing outlet push for re-election in November.
“Yeah, we’re going to do it every week, every Monday I think they said,” Trump claimed during his appearance last week. “And if we can’t do it on a Monday, we’ll do it on a Tuesday like we did today.”
The trio of “Fox & Friends” hosts appeared excited if not a bit surprised when Trump first mentioned he’d be a weekly guest last week.
“We have great people working for you, you don’t even have to get involved,” Trump told the threesome.
While host Brian Kilmeade said it “sounds good” Trump planned to be a regular on the morning program, co-host Steve Doocy said at the end of last week’s show that he couldn’t make any promises.
“Mr. President, thank you very much, uh, you may want to do it every week, but Fox is not committed to that, we’re going to take it on a case-by-case basis,” Doocy said. “And, uh, Joe Biden, as well, is always welcomed to join us for 47 minutes like we just did with the president.”
The Democratic nominee has reportedly deflected offers to appear on Fox News, despite public invites from hosts Doocy, Brett Baier and Chris Wallace.
Fox reps did not respond to a request for comment after Trump’s announcement last week. The president’s relationship with the conservative cable channel is well-documented, with network employees frequently going to work for the Trump administration and vice versa.
Trump announced he’d appear on “Fox & Friends” on Twitter 32 minutes before airtime Monday, followed shortly by a tweet promoting a new book by Fox Business host Lou Dobbs. Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro replied to the former tweet with one of her own, endorsing the president’s 2020 re-election bid.
Trump also used his 86 million-follower Twitter account to promote his 8 p.m. Sunday campaign appearance on a different Fox program. The network’s relationship with the White House helped make Fox News summer’s most-watched channel on prime time.
