Trump on Redskins renaming talk: ‘Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry’

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to express his dismay over the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians considering name changes — and he took a jab at Elizabeth Warren.

“They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct,” Trump tweeted. “Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry right now!”

This isn’t the first time Trump has taken aim at the Massachusetts senator and former presidential hopeful. For years he has referred to her as “Pocahontas.”

It was recently announced that the Redskins and Indians are considering a name change. Redskins merchandise has been pulled from major retailers such as Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods as the team considers a change, USA Today reports.

For years, people have protested the name of the Washington, D.C., NFL team, which is considered an offensive term, especially to Native Americans, The New York Times wrote in a history timeline of the team’s name.

Recently, Cleveland removed the Chief Wahoo logo from its merchandise, which had been used by the franchise since 1947, Bleacher Report said. The logo was replaced by a block C.
