Trump says Kamala Harris a ‘fine choice’ as Biden veepstakes heats up

We’ll see how long Mr. Nice Guy lasts.

President Trump graciously said Wednesday Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) would make a “fine choice” as Democrat Joe Biden nears a decision on his running mate.

Trump, who usually doesn’t hide his disdain for Democratic rivals, spoke as he headed to Texas for a political fundraiser.

Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has said he will announce his vice presidential pick next week.

Harris is the odds-on favorite but no one outside a handful of aides really knows for sure.

Other top candidates include former National Security Adviser Susan Rice, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.) and Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.).

Biden vowed to pick a woman as his running mate and is under pressure to select a Black woman to show Democrats that he is serious about fighting racism amid the nationwide protests for racial justice.

At a campaign event Tuesday, photographers captured Biden holding a palm card with positive talking points about the onetime Democratic primary rival, including “doesn’t hold a grudge.”

Harris famously railed against Biden in a Democratic debate last summer over Biden’s onetime cozy relationship with racist Dixiecrats in the Senate and his opposition to busing as a tool to desegregate public schools.

“There was a little girl in California who was a part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day,” she said. “And that little girl was me.”

At the time, Biden called her comments “a mischaracterization of my position.”

The two have since buried the hatchet and Harris has been a loyal surrogate for Biden since he wrapped up the nomination months ago.

In an odd twist, the news site Politico inadvertently published a profile of Harris that included her being picked as Biden’s veep choice on Aug. 1. The site apologized for what it said was an error, not a scoop.
