Trump stokes fears of NYC crime in inflammatory tweet

President Trump returned to one of his long-standing obsessions, crime in New York City, on Sunday.

“People don’t want to get mugged, beaten up, or killed. Let New York’s Finest (who proudly endorsed me!) do their job,” he ranted on Twitter. “Rehire crime squad and fired police. They will bring safety back to NYC, FAST!!!”

The president may have been referring to the NYPD’s plainclothes anti-crime unit, which was disbanded earlier this summer. Members were reassigned to other units. A handful of officers have been punished for their conduct during recent anti-police-brutality protests, though none have been fired.

Trump was replying to a Saturday tweet from Mayor de Blasio, who urged people to “get out and enjoy” a beautiful day.
