WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – It’s a trial like no other, as the first criminal trial for a former U.S. president starts up in Manhattan.

The former president’s team has tried to delay the case before him many times but the criminal trial around Donald Trump’s hush money case kicks off Monday with jury selection.

“I did nothing wrong from day one, I did nothing,” said Trump.

Former president Donald Trump’s hush money case surrounds an affair allegation and an alleged scheme to pay adult film star Stormy Daniels for her silence.

“When I go to court over nothing. It’s not a crime,” said Trump.

The trial is expected to take six weeks and it starts with jury selection. Trump’s attorney Will Scharf says this process will be difficult.

“I have a lot of faith in our team up there that they’re going to be able to get the best possible jury,” said Scharf.

Potential jurors will be questioned on their political allegiance, knowledge of the case and if they can hand down a judgment in a historic case and more but New Hampshire Governor Republican Chris Sununu does not see this being a big deal politically.

“This trial is not going to have major political ramifications that a lot of people think it may have,” said Sununu.

Michigan’s Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer calls this unprecedented territory.

“This is a man who is loyal to one thing. The truth is not it. It is Donald Trump,” said Whitmer.

NYPD and the Secret Service anticipate a lot of activity during this first day, such as protests, but are working to ensure safety and security.
