Trump to focus on Iran in United Nations address

President Donald Trump is expected to make Iran a major focus of his address Tuesday to the United Nations General Assembly, his third speech to world leaders in New York. The president came on a mission to build an international coalition to oppose Iran, but critics question whether he has enough support among allies on the issue to make much headway. Not helping matters: Trump has been dogged at the U.N. by questions about the widening scandal surrounding his conversations with Ukraine, and whether he threatened to withhold U.S. aide to Kiev unless officials there launched an investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Trump has denied it.

Second parent faces sentencing in college admissions scandal

A Los Angeles business executive is set Tuesday to become the second parent sentenced in the nation's college admissions scandal and the first since actress Felicity Huffman received 14 days in prison earlier this month. Devin Sloane, founder and CEO of a water treatment company, has admitted to paying $250,000 to get his son accepted into the University of Southern California as a fake water polo recruit. Tuesday's hearing will test whether U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani sentences parents who took part in the recruiting plot the same as those who opted for the testing scam, and whether she comes down harder on parents who paid more money to the scheme's mastermind Rick Singer.

Puerto Rico braces for Tropical Storm Karen

Authorities in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands urged residents to prepare for heavy winds, rain and damage on Tuesday and into Wednesday as Tropical Storm Karen rolls toward them. The National Hurricane Center on Monday night said the storm is about 130 miles south-southwest of St. Croix and 160 miles from San Juan, Puerto Rico, with top sustained winds of 35 mph. Gov. Wanda Vázquez said Monday she activated the National Guard and urged people in flood-prone areas to seek shelter. "I urge citizens to be calm but vigilant and update their family plan," Vázquez posted on Twitter. The Hurricane Center warned that much of the islands will see 2 to 4 inches of rain; 8 inches could fall in isolated areas. After lashing Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Karen could impact the U.S. mainland next week.

Chanel Miller, survivor in Brock Turner rape case, publishes memoir

For years, the woman Brock Turner sexually assaulted in 2015 was known only as Emily Doe. Earlier this month, the 27-year old with a literature degree revealed her identity while preparing for the release of her memoir, "Know My Name," available Tuesday. Chanel Miller thought revealing her identity would "absolutely humiliate" her, she told CBS' "60 Minutes" on Sunday, and end her dream of writing children's books. Turner, a former student and swimmer at Stanford University, was convicted of sexual assault but was sentenced to just six months in jail. Later, Miller's 13-page victim impact statement went viral in 2016, and activists credited her with helping spark the #MeToo movement.

The 2020 elections are just right around the corner, which prompts an important question: Are you registered to vote? It's National Voter Registration Day, a holiday first observed in 2012 that seeks to create a broad awareness of voter registration opportunities "to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise." National Voter Registration Day is held on the fourth Tuesday of September. Last year, more than 800,000 people used National Voter Registration Day to register to vote across all 50 states.
