Trump Video Makes False Claim That Children Are ‘Almost Immune’ to COVID-19

During a recent interview with Fox News, President of the United States Donald Trump stated that children are "almost immune" to COVID-19. He then shared a video of that segment on his official Facebook account on Wednesday, prompting Facebook to take it down — the first time the social network has removed the President's content relating to the pandemic.

"This video includes false claims that a group of people is immune from Covid-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful Covid misinformation," said Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone in an official statement. The same video was shared on Twitter by the Trump campaign and by the president's own official Twitter account, although it is since been removed for similarly violating the platform's content policies.

Trump spokesperson Courtney Parella has accused the tech giants of being biased, and said that the President was "stating a fact that children are less susceptible to the coronavirus."

A commonly held misconception in the pandemic is that children are not affected by coronavirus. While infection rates in children have not been as high as infection rates in adults, according to Harvard Medical School, children, including very young children, can develop COVID-19. Often, many of them will have no symptoms, and if they do get sick, their symptoms might be milder than those of adults.

However, children with underlying health conditions tend to be at a higher risk of getting severely ill if they do contract the virus, and there have also been cases where children have experienced serious complications, such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), which can lead to serious, life-threatening issues in the heart and other organs.
