Top Democrats in the House of Representatives laid out two formal charges against Trump on Tuesday, making him only the fourth U.S. president in history to face impeachment.
"When the president got caught he committed his second impeachable act," Schiff said, referring to obstruction of Congress.
Democrats have moved rapidly in their impeachment inquiry since launching an investigation on Sept. 24 into allegations that Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate a Democratic political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, in the 2020 elections.
Responding to Republican critics who have said Democrats have moved too fast in the impeachment probe, Schiff said "Why not let him cheat in one more election. Why not let him cheat just one more time?"
Trump has denied wrongdoing and attacked the impeachment effort in a Twitter post early on Tuesday, saying to impeach a president when the country has such a strong economy “and most importantly, who has done NOTHING wrong, is sheer Political Madness!”
