Thomas M. Hodgson, the former sheriff of Bristol County who was voted out of office last year will serve as chairman of former president Donald Trump's Massachusetts campaign.

“Like most Americans, I want a President who creates real benefits and solutions for our families, neighborhoods, and our nation,” Hodgson said in a statement released by Trump's campaign on Aug. 17. “President Trump has a proven record of strengthening our economy, securing our borders, prioritizing public safety, and improving our national standing throughout the world. As the Massachusetts Chairman, I will work tirelessly with our citizens to elect President Donald J. Trump so that he can Make America Great Again.”

Hodgson previously served as Trump's Massachusetts campaign chairman for his unsuccessful 2020 campaign.

"President Trump looks forward to expanding his movement to compete for and earn the support of delegates from Massachusetts to the Republican National Convention," the Trump campaign said in last week's statement.

Sheriff Hodgson's previous support for Trump

Hodgson, a Republican, was sheriff of Bristol County for 25 years and previously served on the New Bedford City Council. Last year, he was defeated in a bid for reelected by former Attleboro mayor Paul Heroux, a Democrat who was sworn in in January.

Even before working for Trump, Hodgson garnered national media attention for publicly supporting him and his policies. At a speech during his 2017 swearing-in ceremony, the former sheriff offered to send inmates from Bristol County to the U.S./Mexico border to help build then-President-elect Trump’s proposed wall there.

Later that year, he reached out directly to senior Trump political advisor Stephen Miller to report his own church for disseminating information about the immigrants' legal rights, including the rights of undocumented immigrants.

Trump, the clear frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, was recently indicted on criminal charges for the fourth time regarding his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
