President Donald Trump's meeting on Wednesday about efforts to solve the new crisis in Syria reportedly went off the rails after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called out him out for helping Russian President Vladimir Putin in the region by abruptly withdrawing US troops.

The meeting with Democrats and White House officials led to Pelosi walking out and both Trump and Pelosi accusing each other of having a "meltdown."

Citing Democratic sources, The Associated Press and The New York Times reported that the already tense meeting imploded after Pelosi said that Russia had always wanted a "foothold in the Middle East" and that Trump's unexpected withdrawal had given Russia what it wanted.

"All roads with you lead to Putin," Pelosi said, according to both outlets.

The AP reported that this was the moment the meeting fell apart.

"I hate ISIS more than you do," Trump told Pelosi.

"You don't know that," Pelosi responded.

At one point, per The Times, Trump told Pelosi, "You're just a politician." She hit back, saying, "Sometimes I wish you were."

Trump's sudden withdrawal of US troops from Syria has been widely criticized as abandoning the Kurds — US allies in the fight against the terrorist group ISIS — and leaving them open to a military assault by Turkey.

The Kurds have turned to Russia for help, thus giving it a stronghold in the region — something Kurdish leaders have warned of in recent days.

The chaotic nature of the meeting was evident from the conflicting accounts given by the two parties after Pelosi left the room. The AP reported that Trump said, "Goodbye, we'll see you at the polls."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump "insulted" Pelosi during the meeting, calling her a "third-rate politician." Pelosi said Trump said "third-grade."

Schumer said the meeting was "not a dialogue" but "sort of a diatribe, a nasty diatribe."

Pelosi said Trump was "shaken up" by the House voting overwhelmingly to condemn Trump's actions in Syria, according to The Hill.

"That's why we couldn't continue in the meeting, because he was just not relating to the reality of it," she said, later adding, "What we witnessed on the part of the president was a meltdown, sad to say."
