Stop daily laundry loads for Mother Nature

In the Aug. 31 edition of The Register-Guard, columnist Don Kahle wrote that "Grandma Mary" gave him some advice. She told him to do a load of laundry every day. So, he does. But the cover story of that same newspaper warns us that our western redcedars are dying "due to climate, namely the decades-long drought affecting Oregon."

Since the standard washing machine uses 20 gallons of water per load, I hope Kahle will change his daily habit. I'm sure "Grandma Mary" wouldn't object.

QB situation off the mark

Ken Woody’s assessment of Oregon head coach Dan Lanning’s choice to keep Bo Nix playing in a blowout loss was slightly off the mark.

Yes, it’s important to have someone ready to step in if Nix gets hurt, but Lanning’s mistake shows a complete disregard for the future of Oregon football. The more time Ty Thompson spends on the bench watching transfers play mediocre football, the harder it will be to recruit good quarterbacks in the future.

If Lanning continues to snub him, Thompson might consider transferring to a school where he could get some playing time. A post in Yahoo! Sports put it this way: “We’re not predicting he will transfer, but Thompson surely has to wonder if it’s worth sitting on the Oregon pine, deep in the woods, for another whole season.”

Lanning has to show that he is interested in the future of Oregon football, and that he does not look at his job as a springboard back to the southeast.

To draw or not to draw

As far as I can tell from the article (How were early signs missed in shooting? Sept. 1) the Tarolis drawing weapons did not affect the outcome of the tragedy. In these times of gun control discussions, it is important to point this out because the early placement of this fact in the article makes it sound like their drawing weapons was significant. I wonder if the authors realize this type of emphasis is how information is taken out of context and used to support something to which it has no bearing – especially since many people don’t read entire articles or evaluate the relationship of reported actions to end results.

I’ve never been in a shooting incident, but my gut feeling is that seeing someone not in uniform pull a gun in such a situation would increase my fear. Fear that they are another shooter, that untrained people will start shooting at any perceived threat, that people will get shot in the crossfire and that arriving police will start shooting at anyone with a gun. I wonder if, in their post-tragedy discussions, the Tarolis ever seriously evaluated if drawing weapons was the best response in this situation.

When will you left-wingers be satisfied?

I see the media, the FBI and DOJ have again begun the assault on Donald Trump. Pictures and the DOJ's treatment of our ex-president have not ceased. With all that has gone on, one might think the U.S. of A. is on the brink of disaster. From my mind's eye, I see why trust in all the media has fallen.

Ask yourselves about the true nature of the media (R-G included). It reports the leaks from the FBI and DOJ on a daily basis and cares not about justice nor the rule of law, it cares about selling its line of malicious horse feathers.

I have yet to read or see anything resembling truth or fair play. This kind of malfeasance will surely lead to the end of our republic as we know it. To all the left-wingers, will you then be satisfied?

GOP lies again and again

Do Republicans ever tell the truth? I guess since Trump told lie after lie, Republicans are simply following his lead or trying to one-up him. The most recent egregious one being soft pedaled as truth regards the IRS and its inclusion in the Inflation Reduction Act signed into law by President Biden.

The Republican morass quickly took most of the information out of context to support their propaganda machine by scaring Americans with 87,000 agents. It isn’t true.

Those mendacious Republican lawmakers and right-wing commentators who are screaming loudly to defund the FBI and IRS along with the CIA, are putting the safety and welfare of America in danger. It’s time to shut down the factories of lies coming from Republicans and their extremist sources.

Kotek not right for Mahonia Hall

As Oregonians, we face a key question when choosing our next governor: Do we want Kate Brown’s draconian and dictatorial style of governance to continue?

If the answer is “yes” then far-left Tina Kotek is the clear choice. Kotek would be Brown on steroids. Her voting record shows that she is anti-police, anti-law enforcement, anti-voter mandate, anti-Second Amendment, pro-tax and spend and has no qualms about manipulating the system.

When her legislative director was arrested during one of the Portland riots for allegedly interfering with a police officer, Kotek sponsored House Bill 3164 to eliminate interfering with police as grounds for arrest. She cosponsored additional bills to hamstring the police. Under Brown and Kotek’s watch, rioters were allowed to trash and burn Portland with virtual impunity while most of us were locked down.

Kotek joined every Lane County Democrat in the Legislature in repealing the voter mandates of Measures 88 and 97. She has routinely supported bills that have incentivized illegal immigration to Oregon and has supported bogus “emergency” clauses that prevent citizen referenda.

If we value our liberties, law and order, fiscal restraint and government accountability, Tina Kotek is the last person we’d want in Mahonia Hall.

Trump’s next great scam

I'm concerned that fundraising is going slowly for the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library. Mr. Trump announced a while back that the goal of his library foundation is $2 billion for land, design and construction.

The federal government pays for maintenance of presidential libraries, while initial costs are borne by private donors. Perhaps allowing supporters to earmark their donations to the Trump Library might kickstart the fundraising campaign. Among possibilities are two statues planned for library grounds to commemorate the Trump years. One is a life-size statue of Stormy Daniels in a revealing yet tasteful pose. The second statue will portray a colorful, giant cheeseburger with plenty of ketchup.

Another earmarking opportunity for donors might be to fund theHall of Honorannex, a marble shrine to showcase the $10,000 portrait of Mr. Trump bought and paid for by his charitable foundation. Contributors to the charity take great pride in the purchase of this remarkable work of art.

I look forward to touring theHall of Former Secretsgallery of the library, where classified documents will be displayed. Foreign visitors should find it especially interesting.

I can hardly wait for the grand opening!
