When we tried Pimsleur out, we were immediately hooked by its unique learning process and rules: Respond out loud, don’t take notes or look anything up during your training and stick to one lesson a day. Coined by Dr. Paul Pimsleur himself, a linguistics scholar who specialized in language learning, this program is highly interactive according to our tester. In fact, it’s designed to help you get comfortable with vocabulary without needing to constantly study or memorize key phrases and words.

We enjoyed its audio-heavy approach, especially when learning tougher words: Instead of showing you a word visually, the narrator breaks it down syllable by syllable, repeating individual sounds to emphasize the accent. Overall, our tester found that Pimsleur's one-of-a-kind methods truly worked, dubbing it both a successful and rewarding educational experience. She noted that, while she certainly wasn't fluent in Spanish after her few weeks of testing, she felt confident enough to use it in light conversation. If you're not an auditory learner, however, more traditional methods may be more suitable for you, since the program primarily relies so heavily on hearing and listening.

Your subscription comes with short 30-minute audio lessons, reading lessons, digital flashcards and games, plus, you can stream or download to listen offline using the Pimsleur app, though our tester found it a bit distracting and noted that it crashed on occassion.

At the time of her Pimsleur trial, our tester was already relatively familiar with the Spanish language and felt as though that made her lessons a bit easier. She also tested out lessons in Korean and Arabic, which she had no prior experience with, and found that they were more challenging. Overall, however, Pimsleur still managed to break things down in a digestible manner.

Available languages include Spanish, French, Korean, Arabic and more than 40 others, so you can brush up on previously-learned dialectics or study something entirely new—the choice is yours!
