Trying to protest your Tarrant home value? Appraisal District says website is overwhelmed

Since this year’s property value notices were released, Tarrant County property owners have reported being unable to access the Tarrant Appraisal District website.

The website’s functionality is critical during property tax season, because it allows the owners of the county’s nearly 680,000 residential and commercial properties to view their values and protest their values online.

Property owners have reported being unable to access their TAD accounts and that the website is timing out.

Carol Miller, who owns a rental property, said TAD has raised the value of her property for more than 10 years, but, “This year is the worst.”

She unsuccessfully tried to protest her value on Friday and again on Tuesday. She said she was told by two representatives that there were problems with “new” software.

Another agency customer service representative said the online protest function is unavailable for property values that show “pending,” but will be available once the new numbers populate.

TAD leadership attributes these issues to high web traffic.

On Monday, Chief Appraiser Jeff Law issued the following statement: “TAD has been experiencing increased web traffic leading to slower load times. Our information services team has been working today on the website examining performance measures. The team hopes to have improvements in place tonight once web traffic slows down a bit for quicker load times tomorrow.”

On Tuesday a banner on top of the homepage read: “We are currently experiencing high traffic volumes on our website, which may result in slower page load times and intermittent service disruptions. Our team is actively working on addressing this issue and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

The Star-Telegram on Monday released a survey asking readers about their experience with the website.

Of the 25 respondents, 21 reported being unable to access their TAD accounts. The most common message received by users said a time out had occurred on the website.
