TSSAA basketball state championships: Westview vs. Community in 2A semifinal

MURFREESBORO – It's semifinal Friday for the TSSAA BlueCross Girls Basketball State Championships.

The state semifinals for Class 4A, Class 1A and Class 2A will be held at Middle Tennessee State's Murphy Center.

The Class 4A semifinals are Green Hill vs. Bartlett in the first game and Bradley Central vs. Cookeville. The Class 1A semifinals are Hampton vs. Wayne County and Van Buren vs. McKenzie. The Class 2A semifinals are Gibson County vs. McMinn Central and Community vs. Westview.

Westview, the Class 2A defending state champion, leads Community 20-15 at halftime of their semifinal.

MTSU signee Jada Harrison, a Miss Basketball finalist, along with teammate Jillian Brigance lead all scorers with eight points apiece for Westview.

Community's Haley Mitchell and MJ Simmons have six apiece.

Both teams have settled to shoot from the 3-point line. The two are a combined 8-of-24 for the first half.

McMinn Central is heading to its first state championship game since 2015.

McMinn Central defeated Gibson County in the Class 2A state semifinals 58-50.

In the first three minutes of play in the fourth quarter, Gibson County scored nine points to McMinn Central’s three. The Chargerettes didn’t bow out and answered with its own run of 11-0 from the 5:21 mark to 2:03 left in the quarter.

Gibson County’s Micah Hart fouled out with 3:52 left in the fourth quarter, which lessened the team’s scoring options.

The Chargerettes’ Molly Masingale displayed how she affects the game beyond scoring. She finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals. McMinn Central’s Karina Bystry finished with a game-high 25 points and six rebounds.

McMinn Central leads 35-34 at the end of the third period.

McMinn Central started the first two minutes of the third period on an 8-0 run led by sophomore Karina Bystry. She made a 3-pointer on the first offensive possession for McMinn Central. She scored 10 of her team’s 15 points in the third period.

Gibson County came back with its own 5-0 run to tie the game up at 28 with 3:29 left in the period. Evyn Cantrell is up to 15 points for Gibson County.

Gibson County leads 23-20 heading into halftime after a back-and-forth quarter There have been seven lead changes in this game so far.

The Lady Pioneers had an 11-6 run in the final six minutes of the period. Evyn Cantrell has seven points and Libby Goad has six points for Gibson County. Karina Bystry leads McMinn Central with eight points. Molly Masingale is shooting 1-of-7 from the field.

Gibson County and McMinn County tied after one quarter

Gibson County is tied 8-8 in the Cass 2A state semifinals against McMinn Central at the end of the first quarter.

After scoring 29 points in the quarterfinals, McMinn Central junior Molly Masingale made her first field goal of the game — a 3-pointer from the top of the key. She went on to miss her next four shots. McMinn Central is shooting 18% from the field after 11 shots.

Evyn Cantrell scored Gibson County’s first five points and leads the team with six points.

McKenzie cruises to semifinal win over Van Buren

McKenzie took down Van Buren County, 84-59, in a TSSAA Class 1A semifinal to advance to Saturday's championship game, where it will take on Wayne County in a rematch of last season's final.

McKenzie beat Wayne County 46-42 last season to claim its first-ever state title.

Middle Tennessee commit Savannah Davis scored 25 points, Mikaela Reynolds scored 22 and Kylie Reynolds added 19 for the Rebels, who knocked down 12 3-pointers.

Layla Bouldin had 19 points and Cara Mills had 17 for Van Buren County.

McKenzie leads Van Buren big at halftime

McKenzie didn't take its foot off the gas pedal in the second quarter of its Class 1A semifinal against Van Buren. The Rebels lead at halftime, 45-27.

Savannah Davis, Mikaela Reynolds and Kylie Reynolds have combined for 36 points on 13-of-22 shooting for McKenzie. Van Buren hasn't come within 11 points since midway through the first quarter.

McKenzie looks eager to return to the Class 1A state championship game. The Rebels lead Van Buren County, 30-17, after a quarter of play.

Reigning Miss Basketball Savannah Davis has 13 points with Mikaela Reynolds adding eight. McKenzie is shooting 69% from the floor and has hit five of six 3-point attempts.

Cara Mills has scored eight points for Van Buren.

Blair Baugus leads Wayne County back to state title game

Hampton ran out of gas in the fourth quarter as Wayne County stretched what was a close game for three quarters into a 61-39 rout in the Class 1A state semifinal.

A 10-1 run that began with 6:50 left in the game effectively put an end to Hampton's chances as Wayne County's Blair Baugus led her team with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

It's Wayne County's second straight trip to the state championship game and sets up a possible rematch with McKenzie. McKenzie faces Van Buren in Friday's other 1A semifinal.

Wayne County jumped out to the game's first double-digit lead after a 10-0 run gave it a 40-26 lead with 2:54 left in the third quarter. But Hampton responded with its own 6-0 run to close the gap and Wayne County enters the final period with a 42-34 lead.

The lead never stretched larger than four points in the second quarter. And Wayne County holds a 26-22 advantage over Hampton at halftime of their 1A semifinal game.

Blair Baugus has nine points, four rebounds and three steals to lead the Lady Wildcats. Macy Henry leads Hampton with nine points.

Wayne County, Hampton locked in a tight battle after first quarter

Wayne County's smothering defense didn't allow a Hampton shot to get off in the last seconds of the first quarter as Wayne holds a 14-12 lead at the end of the period.

Hampton held a 12-9 lead late in the first but Wayne County responded with five straight to take the early lead in the Class 1A semifinal. Macy Henry leads Hampton with five points. Miss Basketball candidate, Blair Baugus, for Wayne County has four points and four rebounds.

Bradley Central beats Cookeville, will face Bartlett in 4A state title game

Bradley Central led wire-to-wire in a 59-43 win over Cookeville in Friday's TSSAA Class 4A semifinal.

The Bears were led by Harmonie Ware with 20 points, Avary Brewer with 12 and Kimora Fields with an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double. They outrebounded the Cavaliers 34-17 and out-shot them 57% to 28%.

USC Upstate signee Cassie Gallagher had 15 points for Cookeville, which was seeking its first title game appearance of all time.

Bradley Central will face Bartlett Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Bears are looking for their seventh-ever state championship and first since 2019.

Bradley Central maintains lead on Cookeville going into fourth quarter

Cookeville's offense picked up in the third quarter. The Cavaliers scored 13 points, almost as many as they had in the first two quarters combined.

It's helped them get a little bit closer to their first-ever state championship game appearance, but not by much, as Bradley Central still leads 38-27. Harmonie Ware has 15 points for the Bears.

Bradley Central is well on its way towards advancing to its ninth state championship game. The Bears lead Cookeville 31-14 at halftime.

Bradley Central has started strong in its Class 4A semifinal against Cookeville.

The Bears lead the Cavaliers 14-4 after a quarter of play. Four players have gotten in the scoring column for Bradley Central.

Bartlett headed to first final since 1928

Bartlett is headed to the championship.

The Lady Panthers beat Green Hill 56-35 in a Class 4A semifinal to reach their first state championship game since 1928.

Nevaeh Scott led all scorers with 22 for Bartlett. Mallory Collier had 12 points and Faye Williams had 10.

Samford signee Aubrey Blankenship led Green Hill with 10 points.

Bartlett leads Green Hill 41-30 after three quarters and is now eight minutes from playing in its first TSSAA girls basketball state championship game since 1928.

Naveah Scott has 15 points and Mallory Collier has 10 for the Lady Panthers.

Aubrey Blankenship has eight for Green Hill.

Mallory Collier is nearing a double double. The North Carolina State signee has eight points and seven rebounds to go with three blocks in 13 minutes. Teammate Nevaeh Scott also has eight points with two assists.

Samford signee Aubrey Blankenship has six points for Green Hill, a third-year school in Wilson County. Teammates Savannah Kirby and Kensley Carter have five apiece.
