TSSAA Spring Fling: 5 best Jackson area moments from Day 1

MURFREESBORO – The first day of the TSSAA Spring Fling is over.

Here are the top moments from Jackson area high schools from Tuesday's spring sport state tournament action:

McKenzie baseball wins first state tourney game in 16 seasons

McKenzie baseball hasn't been to the state tournament since 2006. That was also the last time they won a state tournament game.

The Rebels defeated University High 10-3 on Tuesday behind Jake McDaniel's third inning grand slam that gave them a 4-2 lead before they would tack on six runs in the sixth inning.

Jackson Cassidy went 3-3 and Colin McLearen went 3-4 with a double and two runs scored.

They will play at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Rockvale.

4 West Tennessee track and field athletes win state titles, Madison wins relay

Camden junior Will Douglas repeats as the Class 1A champion in the 3,200 meters with a time of 9 minutes, 28.31 seconds. He also helped Camden finish second in the 4x800 relay in 8:31.36.

Milan's Andy Westbrook won the Class 2A high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 8 inches. Haywood's JaDerrika Welch-Fields won the Class 3A high jump at 5-4. Ripley's TJ Edler who won the Class 3A high jump at 23-4½.

Genesis Pearson, Madissen Mebane, MK Nye and Sandrea Hurt led Madison to winning the 4x200 relay in 1:44.75.

Baseball play from first day

McKenzie's Jake McDaniel had the best baseball play of the night when he hit a grand slam in the 10-3 win over University High in the third inning.

Hardin County softball gets its first state tournament win

The Lady Tigers, making their first state tournament appearance since 2019, defeated Dyer County 3-2 to win their first state tournament game.

First baseman Jaycee Beth Franks went 1-3 with two RBIs.

Pitcher Kenzie Moore, who pitched a eight strikeout no-hitter in the 8-0 win against Montgomery Central, had four strikeouts.

They will play at 10 a.m. at Starplex against Gibbs.

USJ and Union City girls tennis teams to play for team titles

USJ girls tennis defeated USN 4-0 to advance to the championship for the second straight year, as the Lady Bruins look to defend their Division II-A title.

The Lady Bruins will play at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday against St. George's at Adams Tennis Complex.

Union City defeated Unicoi County 4-2 to advance to the Class A championship for the first time since 2000.

They will play at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday against Summertown.
