TSSAA Spring Fling: Collierville boys tennis gets 1st team title, more from Day 2

MURFREESBORO — The wet weather has stuck around, but the TSSAA spring championships are still afloat after two days.

Wednesday saw several triumphs from Memphis-area teams at Spring Fling as well as a few teams coming up short.

Here's what happened around Rutherford County during Spring Fling, Day 2.

First state title

Ajay Arul defeated Ravenwood's Jackson Stone to seal Collierville's first tennis team state championship. The Dragon defeated Ravenwood 4-1. Aneesha Achanta defeated Tanner Wright 6-2 in both sets, Tristan Kelly defeated Michael Eastham 6-3 and 6-2 in his match and Carter Amaba defeated Ewan Kim 6-4 and 6-2 in his match to help the Dragons win the title.

Collierville tennis has a chance to win state titles in the boys' singles and doubles as well, which begin Thursday.

No repeat soccer champions

Houston lost to Oakland in overtime to end its title defense in the first round of the Class AAA tournament Tuesday. On Wednesday, Christian Brothers lost to Father Ryan 2-1 in a rematch of the Division II-AA state championship game.

The Purple Wave struck first on a Will Enterline goal in the sixth minute of the game. Father Ryan would tie the game up before half.

Ben Emerson then broke the tie in the 47th minute, just six minutes into the second half, which proved to be the game-winning goal. . With the loss, there will be no repeat champions from Memphis in boys soccer.

Collierville soccer falls to Brentwood

The Dragons came up one game short of their first state championship appearance in soccer with a 3-2 loss to Brentwood on Wednesday.

Amidst a rainy evening, Brentwood and Collierville played to a 0-0 draw at the half. Less than a minute into the second half, Brentwood out to a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Luke Johnson scored to tie the game.

In the 55th minute, Joseph Salazar scored to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead before Brentwood scored twice in the final 15 minutes for the win.

Collierville baseball looks to stay alive

The Dragons suffered their first loss of the state baseball tournament, losing to Farragut 7-6 on Wednesday night. Collierville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. In the bottom half, Farragut responded with four runs to take the lead. It added three runs in the third inning before Collierville scored three runs in the fourth in its comeback effort.

Ryan Neilson got the start on the mound for Collierville and pitched just 1⅔ innings. He had four strikeouts.

Offensively, it was Grant Ross leading the Dragons, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Christian Dunn added a hit with two RBIs for Collierville. With the loss, the Dragons will play Riverdale in an elimination game Thursday morning.
