TSSAA Spring Fling top moments: Rockvale's Jakobe Tharp, Lewis Lagrant win state titles

Rockvale's Jakobe Tharp and Lewis Lagrant both brought home state titles during the TSSAA track and field Class AAA state championships Thursday at MTSU's Dean Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.

Tharp had a big day, winning the boys 110-meter hurdles (14.17) while taking second in the 200 (21.76) and was on the Rockets' 4x200 relay team that placed fifth.

He holds the state record in the 110 hurdles.

Lagrant won the state title in the high jump, being the only competitor to leap 6 feet, 6 inches. Riverdale's Mackey Bonds was second in the event at 6-4.

It was also a big day for Rockvale's Amani Sharif and La Vergne's John Sherman.

Sharif placed third in the long jump (an event she won last year) with a leap of 17-8.5, was tied for third in the high jump (5-2), placed fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.43) and was on the 4x200 relay team that placed eighth.

Sherman was second in the 100 (10.88), fourth in the 200 (21.85) and ran the anchor leg for both the Wolverine 4x200 relay (fifth, 1:28.43) and 4x100 relay (eighth, 43.23).

4x200: Rockvale (Xarya Udoumana, Ariya Scott, Makayla James, Amani Sharif) eighth, 1:44.16.

Lady Red Hawks eliminated

There wasn't much softball played Thursday because of rain, but Stewarts Creek and Wilson Central were able to resume a game that started Wednesday.

Unfortunately for the Lady Red Hawks, the Lady Wildcats captured a 3-1 win in the 4A losers bracket, eliminating SCHS. Wilson Central scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.

Stewarts Creek (29-12-1) tied things at 1-1 in the top of the third on Wednesday when Reese Vivrette hit a solo homer. Rain then suspended the game in the bottom of the third.

Grace Fujino allowed three earned runs on just five hits, striking out five, for Stewarts Creek. Hannah McMeen was 2-for-4 for the Lady Red Hawks.

Davenport reaches state semis

Cannon County senior Gus Davenport reached the boys singles semifinals at the Class A state tennis tournament .

Davenport defeated Rockwood's Ajay Tilley 8-6 in the quarterfinals before falling 8-6 to Chattanooga Arts and Sciences sophomore Ethan Porterfield in the semis.

Siegel freshman Rich LaLance lost in the Class AA boys quarterfinals, 8-4, to Hendersonville's Jackson Penney.

Siegel freshman Ellie Zolt was edged in the Class AA girls quarterfinals, falling 8-6 to Collierville junior Ella DeJesus.
