Tucker Carlson got what he deserves

A Feb.17  letter highlights the dangerous misconceptions and lies propagated by the pro-Putin sentiment of the MAGA minority. Nobody is wrongly skewering Tucker Carlson. Why do you think he is working in Russia interviewing Putin? Because he loves the freedom of the press there? Maybe because he is too much of a liability for any real news organization that is held responsible for the content of their stories. He didn’t want to know Putin’s reason for attacking Ukraine. Everybody knows it wasn’t to “de-Nazify.” It was an invasion of a small democracy by a powerful dictatorship for territory, power and the “Glory of Russia.” That is exactly why Putin wanted to negotiate to keep the territory he seized. Nobody in this country is supporting a policy that is needlessly killing thousands of Ukrainians. Putin is doing that and we are trying to help stop him. Tucker Carlson deserves to be skewered.

Why's Florida hell-bent on ending home rule?

So much for the free state of Florida. Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature are taking the voice of the people away. I thought they believed in limiting government, not limiting freedom. What are they so afraid of? Our local communities have to have the ability to solve local problems.

High Court needs to review gun rights

Hal Habib's Feb. 18 article on shootings at athletic events touches on the broader problem of preventing gun violence. It involves keeping people with dangerous histories from having access to guns. The difficulty of legislating simple reforms regarding purchasing, owning, and carrying weapons, and recognizing that belated 'thoughts and prayers' are no match for what a gun can do. Most important of all is getting the U.S. Supreme Court to recognize that the Second Amendment's intention was merely to provide states with armed citizens to recruit into militias to counter what they feared most, the army of a federal government opposed to individual states' rights, specifically the right to own slaves. I hope that It is only a matter of time until that Court reverses its 2008 decision in D.C. vs Heller, which has led to thousands of deaths in this country from gun violence.

Gun violence stretches insanity

Imagine living in a country where guns are loved more than human life, where children are murdered in school, where men and women are murdered in churches and synagogues, where grandmothers and their grandchildren are murdered in grocery stores, where young and old are murdered in malls and at sports celebrations, where citizens want safer gun use, and legislation to protect them and their loved ones but never get it. Is this a sane country?
