Tuesday’s Basketball Rewind: Chambers shocks No. 1 Myers Park on wild Tuesday

Myers Park might be a nationally-ranked boys’ basketball team, but the Mustangs aren’t kings of Mecklenburg County yet.

Chambers, arguably the county’s dominant power in recent seasons, shocked the host Mustangs 71-60 Tuesday night in a game that throws a blanket of uncertainty over what to expect from each team this season.

The Cougars entered the game with a 1-2 record and four new starters. One of the standouts off last year’s state quarterfinalist team, guard Jaylen Curry, transferred in the offseason to a Florida private school. Another standout, center Daniel Sanford, is playing for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Myers Park, meanwhile, entered the game ranked No. 22 nationally by Maxpreps and among the top 35 in several other polls.

Coach Scott Taylor’s Mustangs (1-1) showed sparks of what had been expected of the team this year.

But for large portions of the game, Chambers’ defense stymied the Myers Park offense, forcing turnovers and converting them into layups or dunks.

Playing before a packed house in a steamy gym, Chambers outscored the Mustangs 15-0 over a three-minute span of the fourth quarter and never led by less than 10 afterwards.

Myers Park trailed for much of the first half but outscored the Cougars 20-10 in the third quarter.

Sir Mohammed scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in that period, and the Myers Park defense stopped Chambers from driving to the basket, as they had done frequently in the first half.

“Our guys never quit working,” Chambers coach Brian Frasier said. “As long as they don’t quit working, I know good things will happen.”

In the final eight minutes, the Cougars worked hard, and good things happened.

Trailing 45-40 at the start of the period, Chambers forced seven Myers Park turnovers in the final quarter and converted most of those into baskets.

Jahmir Brown scored seven points in the closing eight minutes, including a 3-pointer that ignited Chambers’ big run. The Cougars trailed 49-44 with 5:45 left, but a little more than three minutes later, they were up 59-49.

Nick Dorn led Chambers with 20 points, and Maurio Hanson added 12 points, including a backward dunk in the closing minutes.

Boswell Bishop (14 points) and Elijah Strong (13) joined Mohammed in double figures for Myers Park.

Both teams have 10-day breaks to prepare for their conference openers Dec. 9.

Myers Park launches its SoMeck 4A schedule that night at home against Berry Academy. Chambers plays its Queen City 3A-4A opener the same evening at West Mecklenburg.
