Tuesday’s Boys Basketball Rewind: No. 6 Cannon stops No. 8 United Faith in close win

Cannon School, No. 6 in The Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16, got a big win Tuesday over No. 8 United Faith in a game matching a pair of N.C. private school state title contenders.

Cannon (8-3) got off to a 44-35 halftime lead before United Faith made a brief push in the third quarter. The Cougars had a 28-23 advantage in the fourth quarter to win.

Four Cougars scored in double figures: Miami-bound guard Austin Swartz (25 points), Lincoln Vinson (22), Isaiah Henry (18) and Jay Clagett (15). Cannon’s Max Murash had four points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

JD Bowden (27 points) and DJ Boyce (24) led United Faith, which fell to 8-2.

Isaiah Evans, North Mecklenburg: The Vikings’ Duke signee had a game-high 26 points in a 94-33 win over Berry.

Ahmari Hicks, East Mecklenburg: Hicks had a game-high 23 points in a 74-54 win over Piedmont.

Preston Scott, Charlotte Country Day: Scott tied for a team-high with 15 points in an 80-59 win over Legion Collegiate. Country Day, No. 16 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, improved to 9-0.

Junior Smith, Lincolnton: Smith had a game-high 28 points in an 85-48 win over Avery County.

Austin Swartz, Cannon School: Miami signee had a team-high 25 points as Cannon, No. 6 in The Sweet 16, beat No. 8 United Faith 93-82.
