Tuesday’s boys’ basketball rewind: No. 1 Myers Park gets tested, stops Ardrey Kell

Only three regular-season games remain, conference tournaments start in less than two weeks, and the state playoffs are just three weeks away.

And Scott Taylor, coach of defending 4A state champion Myers Park, isn’t sure where his team stands on its quest for a second straight state crown.

“We really haven’t been healthy for much of this season,” Taylor said Tuesday night, after his team beat Ardrey Kell 75-60 and moved within a victory of clinching the SoMeck 4A Conference regular-season championship.

Taylor said Notre Dame commit Sir Mohammed, a 6-6 wing, and several teammates have spent much of the season dealing with injuries.

“He is getting himself back into game shape now,” Taylor said of Mohammed, who scored a game-high 22 points Tuesday night. “But in a way, these guys are still getting accustomed to one another. It’s been a bit of a process this season.”

The Mustangs (19-2, 7-0) certainly took a good shot from the host Knights (21-8, 7-2).

“It’s never easy to win over here,” Taylor said.

Myers Park led 36-30 at halftime and opened the second half on a 10-2 run for a 46-32 lead. The Knights kept within sight of the Mustangs, though, and then went on a 12-2 run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. That cut the Myers Park lead to 53-49 and had the noise level at full blast in the nearly-full Ardrey Kell gym.

“I liked the way we played with poise down the stretch,” Taylor said.

After the Knights made their run, Mohammed scored on a short jumper, then added another basket after an Ardrey Kell turnover. Josh Hines then scored on a 3-pointer, Sadiq White got a tip-in, and Bishop Boswell slammed down a pass from Mohammed. At that point, Myers Park was up 64-49, and the game was decided.

White added 17 and Boswell 15 for Myers Park. Caden Caskey scored 21 points for Ardrey Kell, with Delani Hammonds adding 15.
