Tuesday’s boys’ high school basketball rewind: West Meck keeps growing, beats Garinger
The West Mecklenburg Hawks have a young core, and the players believe every game they can play together matters.
In a dominant 67-35 win over Garinger on Tuesday at home, the Hawks said their goal was to continue to build chemistry — and get ready to contend for a 3A playoff berth within the Queen City 3A/4A conference.
West Meck (5-6, 2-3), with a roster that includes five sophomores and a freshman, snapped a two-game home losing streak.
“We only have three seniors and two juniors,” Hawks coach Ryan Queen said. “So, we are very young. But, I think the core, young group that I have right now is invested in the program.”
Queen said his biggest job now is to keep the young players he has, develop them and continue to get new players interested in the program.
One of the Hawks’ sophomores, Chase McDonald, was the catalyst in the win over Garinger, finishing with 21 points, including three 3-pointers.
“I feel like as a team we just came together more,” McDonald said. “We were able to trust one another with extra passes, get to the basket and knock down free throws.”
The Hawks have lost their only game against an in-conference 3A team so far this season. They still have a shot at a top seed, but will have to win at home against Harding on Friday, and then beat Harding again, and West Charlotte, later this season.
“I think Friday’s game (against Harding) is very important with us, West Charlotte and Harding being the only 3A schools in Charlotte,” Queen said. “Every time we have one of those games, it’s pretty much like a playoff game.”
THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE
Chase McDonald, West Meck: The sophomore shooting guard led all scorers in the game. His 13 points in the third quarter propelled the Hawks to a lead that Garinger couldn’t overcome.
Isaiah Morrison-Crawford, West Meck: The 6-1 senior forced several turnovers that led to Hawks scores. He scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half.
Cam Higgins, West Meck: The Hawks’ point guard came in leading his team in scoring. He had 10 points and found his teammates for easy layups.
WHAT’S NEXT
West Meck (5-6) has a few days off before facing Harding in a 3A conference game on Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Garinger (1-13) will host Rocky River on Jan. 19, also at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday’s #BIG5 top performers
Jeremiah Howard, Concord: In a 99-54 win over East Rowan, Howard had his fifth double-double of the season: 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.
Grant Lawless, East Lincoln: In a 74-67 win over St. Stephens, Lawless had a career-high 30 points and 10 rebounds.
Chase McDonald, West Mecklenburg: McDonald scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter in a win over Garinger.
Robert Magner, Pine Lake Prep: In a 63-53 win over Corvian Community, Magner had a game-high 29 points.
Trent Steinour, Lake Norman: In a 79-58 win over Cox Mill, the 6-foot-10 junior center had 22 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks.
