Tuesday meeting to focus on skatepark at Weymouth's Beals Park

WEYMOUTH – Town officials say they want to hear residents’ ideas for incorporating a skatepark into the updates planned for Beals Park in North Weymouth.

The town's department of planning and community development will host a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, in the lower level of Tufts Library.

The firm Activitas Inc. will facilitate the meeting along with skatepark consultant Newline Skateparks. Residents will have a chance to weigh in on the design of the proposed skatepark and ask questions about the project.

A plan to renovate Beals Park will likely include improved opportunities for passive and active recreation, according to town officials.

Beals Park is near Route 3A and Sea and Athens streets. The town is looking at ways of improving the park and increasing  its use. Plans include a skatepark on the east side of the park near Athens Street.

The town previously had a skateboarding park at Lovell Field in East Weymouth, but it came down in 2017 to make room for a $6 million overhaul of the fields.

Lovell Field got two regulation-size artificial-turf soccer fields and a smaller practice field, as well as a new playground, lighting, new parking and a walking trail around the perimeter as part of Mayor Robert Hedlund’s $11.4 million field improvement plan.

The town has continued to  improve parks around town. Last year, the town council approved spending $30,000 to begin exploring potential upgrades at Beals Park.
