Struggling discount retailer Tuesday Morning has closed its three remaining Iowa stores, in West Des Moines, Coralville and Davenport.

The Dallas-based discount home décor and home furnishing retailer previously had closed a store in Ankeny.

The company in February filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in three years. In March, A&G Real Estate Partners, a real estate firm working with Tuesday Morning as it reorganizes its business, announced plans to auction off leases at about 250 stores nationwide that will close this year.

Retail trade publication Retail Dive reported that before its first bankruptcy in 2020 the company had about 700 stores. Recently it had 487 stores.

It's the latest example of the carnage in the brick-and-mortar retail industry as profit margins dwindle, in part because of online competition:

  • Omaha, Nebraska-based home goods and clothing discounter Gordman's, which once had eight Iowa stores, closed its remaining stores in a 2020 liquidation.

  • Pier 1 Imports, unable to find a buyer after its 2020 bankruptcy, also shut down. It had eight Iowa stores, including in Ankeny, Clive, West Des Moines and Coralville.

  • Bed Bath & Beyond has struggled, closing stores in Coralville, Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Sioux City earlier this year. Only a Clive location remains.

A history of Tuesday Morning on its website says it was founded in 1974 by Lloyd Ross, who bought leftover inventory from big-name manufacturers and held "the world's greatest garage sale" on Tuesday mornings in a Dallas warehouse.

The business eventually established stores around the nation that operated all week but encouraged appointment shopping by introducing new inventory on Tuesday mornings.
