1. Bank of England warns of 'apocalyptic' global food shortage

The Governor of the Bank of England has warned of “apocalyptic” global food price rises and said he is "helpless" in the face of surging inflation as the economy is battered by the war in Ukraine.

2. Boris Johnson’s plan to scrap Northern Ireland Protocol must be put into law, warns DUP

Boris Johnson has been warned by the DUP that plans to override the Northern Ireland Protocol - due to be announced on Tuesday - may not convince it to agree to power-sharing in Stormont.

3. Covid lockdowns left toddlers unable to speak or play properly

Toddlers’ speech and motor skills have dropped sharply in the wake of the pandemic, official data show.

Experts said that repeated lockdowns had left young children without the chance to play and learn how to communicate, setting back their development.

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) raised fears that the gaps being witnessed now could widen in coming years, with increasing numbers of children struggling at school because basic skills were never learned. Read the full story.

4. JK Rowling backs feminist campaigner who was ‘assaulted’ by balaclava-clad trans activists

A feminist campaigner has claimed police threatened to arrest her for a peaceful protest at a statue of Emmeline Pankhurst, where she was allegedly assaulted by balaclava-clad trans activists.

Aleks Kovacevic, 44, was hailed by JK Rowling for standing firm in the face of “intimidation” from a group of masked counter-protesters who disrupted an event organised by gender-critical campaigners in Manchester on Sunday. Read the full story.

5. Wounded Ukrainian defenders rescued from Mariupol steelworks to be exchanged for captive Russians

More than 260 Ukrainian soldiers holed up in the Azovstal steel plant for 82 days were evacuated to Russian-controlled towns on Monday night pending an "exchange", the Ukrainian government said.

The evacuation appeared to cede control of the strategic port city of Mariupol to Russia after months of bombardment, drawing to a close one of the war’s bloodiest and most high-profile battles. Read the full story.
