Tuesday's election draws light turnout

Nov. 8—There were plenty of Democrats on Tuesday's ballot, but only two won office.

Tim McElderry, D, beat Bob Harris, R, in his bid for the Zionsville Town Council Ward 1 seat. And Oluwatoberu 'Tobe' Thomas, D, bested Kevin Russell, R, for the Whitestown Town Council Ward 4 position.

Lebanon City Councilman John Copeland, R, earned double the votes of his opponents for the District 5 seat.

Although the election went smoothly, only 22% of those eligible to vote did so, compared to 31% four years ago, Boone County Clerk Lisa Bruder said. Votes were all counted by about 7:45 p.m.

Both mayoral races had been determined in the spring. Lebanon Mayor Matthew Gentry, R, earned a third term. And John Stehr, R, will take over for Zionsville Mayor Emily Styron, who did not seek re-election. No Democrats sought the mayors' seats.

The May primary election will include presidential candidates and those running for county offices.
