No Armageddon: Put Republicans in charge

The president keeps telling us that to “preserve democracy,” we have to always vote Democratic and create a one-party government.  That was the Democratic Party’s closing argument before today’s midterm elections.

Liberal commentators and politicians have suggested that electing Republicans would be sending America down the path of Nazi Germany.  One even suggested that electing Republicans would lead to our children being “arrested and even killed.”

Clearly, there is only one party that has completely lost its mind and its soul. With no accomplishments or sane policies to run on, it comes down to name-calling and ridiculous claims that the world will end if Republicans take control of the House or Senate.

For me, that message simply re-enforces the need to have Republicans in charge of at least one body as a hedge against the current administration’s idiocy.

Vote for Democrats, not ‘lost’ party

On Election Day, voters should consider the wonderful two-party system that “we the people” can control. But only if we vote.

I was a lifelong Republican but converted to the Democratic Party before the 2016 election. I am pushing back against a party that has lost its way.

I can’t stand the Republicans’ dishonesty, lack of morals and lack of accountability. They don't even have a platform!

We can only guess what the Republicans stand for, other than retaining power at all costs, even to the detriment of our country.

Republicans have moved too far to the right, criticizing our wonderful, secure election system and the opposing candidates instead of promoting their own plans to improve our country.

It is time for us, the voters, to push back to the middle where we belong, forcing Democrats and Republicans to compromise on issues. Again.

Please, vote for Democrats. The Republican Party will change sooner or later. And at that time, I will probably convert back to the Grand Old Party of yesteryear.

For GOP, elections are win-win proposition

I’ve been paying close attention to the various election deniers – all Republicans – and because their leadership is not shutting down this nonsense, I can only infer that the Republican Party supports these absurd theories, and accordingly I will further infer the following regarding near-term elections:

• If the races are close, the Republican candidates win.

• If the Democrats win, the Republicans win, because the elections were rigged.

• If the Republicans win, the Republicans win, because they passed voting laws last year to support election integrity.

I wish Republicans were as courageous as they are cowardly.

High taxes, poor service in Sarasota

Astronomical property taxes are what we pay to live in the city of Sarasota!  Yet more than a month since Hurricane Ian, there are still piles of rotting debris festering in neighborhoods.

Not only is this potentially toxic and unsafe for communities due to disease-carrying infestations of rodents, the debris blocks traffic, deliveries, etc.

Another baffling issue is the number of electrical outages that lasted well over a week. Florida is one of the richest states in the U.S., yet our electrical grid seems to be painfully outdated.

It’s no wonder that voter suppression has been a tremendous priority of Florida legislators for decades!

Where is our money going?

UnidosNow director left her mark

My wife, Rona, and I want to congratulate our dear friend, Luz Corcuera, on her retirement as the executive director of UnidosNow.

Luz is not only a fantastic leader of this organization – she is also one of the kindest, most caring people we have had the privilege of knowing.

Her outreach to so many parts of our community is a testament to her love for all people, regardless of race, color or national origin. Her heart is as big as all outdoors.

We join Luz’s many friends in wishing her the very best in the years ahead and thanking her for all she has done to make the lives of so many people so special.

We hope she enjoys the future, knowing she has the respect and admiration of a community that thanks her for all she has done to make our lives better.

Show gratitude in thank-you card

I am responding to Marni Jameson’s Nov. 5 column, “How not to be that houseguest.” While I loved the article and the 15 gentle reminders, she omitted a very important item.

After staying in someone’s house, always send a thank-you card.  I know in this day and age texts are more acceptable, but a card means you actually took the time to put pen to paper to express your gratitude to your host.

It shows you took that extra step of appreciation.
