Tuesday's Maine college roundup: Talon helps St. Joseph's women's basketball earn quarterfinal win
Feb. 21—Hannah Talon scored 14 of her 25 points in the first quarter as St. Joseph's jumped to a nine-point lead and cruised to an 80-51 win over Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's basketball quarterfinal game on Tuesday in Standish.
The Monks, the No. 1 seed in the North Division, improved to 21-5 overall and 15-2 in the conference. They advance to the semifinals on Thursday and face Rivier. Johnson & Wales, the fourth-seed in the South Division, finishes 10-16 overall and 7-11 in the conference.
Nina Howe added 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists for St. Joseph's. Elisabeth Stapelfeld had 11 points and Hailey Anderson had 10.
Peyton Oliver had 16 points and Sarah Wisniewski had 10 for Johnson & Wales.
CASTLETON 70, SOUTHERN MAINE 57: Kelly Vuz scored 22 points as the fourth-seeded Spartans (17-9, 10-7) beat the fifth-seeded Huskies (8-18, 6-10) in the quarterfinals of the Little East Conference tournament in Castleton, Vermont.
Elise Magro added 20 points and seven assists for Castleton, who advances to play Eastern Connecticut State in the semifinals on Thursday.
Maria Degifico had 16 points and Franny Ramsdell had 15 points for Southern Maine.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 63, SUFFOLK 53: Faye Veilleux posted 21 points and eight rebounds as the second-seeded Nor'easters topped the seventh-seeded Rams in a GNAC quarterfinal in Standish.
Keagan Dunbar added 13 points and Kasey Oliver had 10 points for UNE, which advances to the semifinals to face No. 6 Endicott on Thursday.
Amanda DeAngelis and Madi Mahoney led Suffolk with 13 points each.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
UMASS DARTMOUTH 77, SOUTHERN MAINE 75: Cody Hawks scored 20 of his 27 points in the second half as the second-seeded Huskies (16-10, 10-7 LEC) tried to rally from a 15-point halftime deficit, but came up short and lost to the third-seeded Corsairs (9-17, 8-9) in the LEC quarterfinals in Gorham.
Chance Dixon, Diego Colon and Mark Asare each had 10 points for Southern Maine.
Dhlayn Sanders-Dyer had 28 points, and Isaac Percy had 15 points for UMass Dartmouth. John Martins Jr. added 14 points, and Jackson Zancan had eight points and 13 rebounds.
ST. JOSEPH'S 79, REGIS 63: Julian Llopiz had 20 points as the Monks (15-11, 11-7 GNAC) beat the Pride (14-12, 10-9) in the conference quarterfinals in Standish.
Ashtyn Abbott added 14 points for St. Joseph's, which advances to face St. Joseph of Connecticut in the semifinals on Thursday. John Paul Fraizer added 11.
Jamir Harvey had 15 points and Justin Evelyn 14 for Regis.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
BATES 11, FORT LEWIS COLLEGE 6: Carolina Taggart had two goals and an assist as the Bobcats beat the Skyhawks in their season opener in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Lauren Wong added two goals for Bates, and Maddy Roelofs and Clare McGeever each had a goal and an assist. Sadie O'Neil, Sophia Scola, Trish Balser, Shelby Howard and Hanna Matthews all had one goal. Cammie Lavoie had five saves.
Haley Dostie had three goals for Fort Lewis College.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 8, SOUTHERN MAINE 7: Meagan Donovan scored twice in the third quarter as the Nor'easters scored three times on their way to a season-opening win over the Huskies in Biddeford.
Sydney Balotin, Kimmy Stanair, Ann Chapman, Paige DeVries, Emily Jacobs and Miceala Jacobs also scored for UNE. Maria Turriza made eight saves.
Rachel Shanks, Kiaya Gatchell and Anna Byers all scored twice for Southern Maine. Jillian Nichols added a goal and Cece Racine had five saves for the Huskies.
MEN'S LACROSSE
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 13, ST. JOSEPH'S 9: Colin Watt and Jordan White each had three goals and three assists as the Nor'easters collected a season-opening victory over the Monks in Standish.
Shea Fogarty and Ryan Hazard each added two goals for UNE. Andrew Lawrence had a goal and two assists and Evan Hazard made 18 saves.
Timothy Goodfellow, Will Levesque and Noah Tierney-Honan all scored twice for St. Joseph's. Scott Walsh had six saves.
